Description

The monument (with original paint) of Alderman Thomas Machen (d:1614) and his wife Christian (d:1615), with their children shown at the base, in the north aisle of Gloucester Cathedral (Holy Trinity). To the right is the bronze statue of Canon E.D. Tinling (d:1897) with a marble surround. Photo taken 26 August 2014. Inscription: Here lie buried the bodies of Thomas Machen Esqr late Alderman of this City of Gloucester and thrice Maior of the same, who departed this life the 18 day of October 1614 in the 74th yeare of his age. And of Christian his wife with whome hee lived in the estate of Marriage 50 yeares, and has Issue 7 Sonnes and 6 Daughters. Shee departed this life Iune 29 1615 in the 70th yeare of her age. RES REDIT HUC, MORIMUR. MORS ULTIMA LINEA RERUM.

Top left is the old coat of arms of the Town of Gloucester: Vert, on a pale or a sword azure, bezanted, the hilt and pommel gules, upon the point a cap of maintenance purpure lined ermine, all between two horseshoes argent pierced sable, each between three nails in triangle argent; on a chief per pale or and purpure a boar's head couped argent, in his mouth a queen apple gules, between two demi-roses, the dexter gules, the sinister argent, both rayed or (Granted 1538; surrendered 1647).
