yVAcademie des Sciences^ by which a sum of2,500,000 francs was raised. The presentservice was inaugurated the 18th of Novem-ber, 1888. This was after Pasteurs study onrabies had created a demand for his treat-ment that had resulted in his old laboratoryin the Rue dUlm becoming wholly inade-quate for the patients who came to him foranti-rabic inoculation. In 1894 the communication of Dr. Rouxon the treatment of diphtheria by the serumof Behring and Kitasato again aroused publicsentiment in regard to serum therapy, and asecond subscription, started by the Figaro,resulted in a large sum by which additionalbuildings were built sufficient to immunize alarge number of horses for obtaining anti-diphtheria antitoxin. A hospital of 100 bedswas made possible by the donation of a millionfrancs from a friend of the Institute, andlater the contribution of Baron Hirsch madepossible the erection of the physiologicalchemistry institute on the Rue Dutot. Pasteuk PARIS mately been given to other institutions indifferent parts of the workl, where pupils ofle Maitre (as Pasteur is always referred tohere) have been installed to give the Pasteurtreatment against rabies. At Lille is Dr.Calmette; at Constantinople is Dro Nicolle;at Tunis, Dr. Loir. The personnel of the Institute is dividedinto services. First is the service des vaccins,directed by Dr. Chamberland. Here areprepared vaccines against anthrax, hog chol-era, and glanders; and here also tuberculinis prepared. The second service is the ser-vice de la rage, the purpose of which is toprevent the people bitten by mad dogs frombecoming themselves the victims of hydro-phobia. This service is under the directionof Dr. Grancher. Since the end of 1885 morethan 23,000 persons have submitted for anti-rabic treatment in this place. The mortalityof those treated is less than five in each thou-sand. Before this treatment was institutedfifteen out of each hundred persons bitten bymad dogs died.
