Rudolph Yirchow BERLIN make you wonder if they were ever ventilated.But it is these same old buildings that call thestudent of medical history first to the Charite,for here was made much of the German medi-cine that we from the West come to seek. Personally, I am not at all romantic, butwhen for the first time I came upon the oldweather-beaten building, with its now crumb-ling plaster-walls, where Rudolph Virchowerected the frame-work of cellular pathologyfor all scientific medicine to build upon, Istood for a full hour with my hat in my hand,my mind struggling to grasp the secret of hisachievements. And when finally I came backto earth I had no desire to go through thenew Institute across the way, but reservedthat visit for another day and went slowlyhomeward. The foundation of the Charite dates fromthe year 1710. The cause of the erection ofthe first building was the outbreak of theplague in Prussia, in 1709, but the plaguespared Berlin, and the building was used asa poor-house and
