Summary
[edit]DescriptionGlendaruel, 316 Karori Rd entrance (portrait).jpg |
English: This domestic dwelling is registered with Heritage New Zealand (the entire building, its fittings and fixtures, and the land comprised in Certificate of Title WN 441/261 but excludes the garage). It is an early pit-sawn timber cottage built around 1874. Glendaruel is also historically significant for association with the Wellington suburb of Karori as the land on which it is located was one of the earliest settled plots in Karori, and has been occupied since 1856. Notable figures associated with this property include Stephen Lancaster (one of Karori's largest landowners and an important early local politician) and Pierre Finch Martineau Burrows P.F.M Burrows, a prominent colonial architect, who designed his best-known buildings during his residence. Charlotte Eliza Wood purchased the property in May 1919 on her reverend husbands retirement and the Woods family remained in residence until recently. The Woods named the property 'Glendaruel' because of the families Scottish heritage. |
