thbrood, if possible, and to fill up with combsof mature brood. In this way work may bebegun in the supers within a short time. If I find a colony i^reparing to swarmwith a queen of good age, and yet a colonywhich for some reason may not have a largenumber of bees, I often take the queenaway, with perhaps tv^^ice as many bees asnecessary to care for the brood, and placethem in a new hive with an empty comb onone side and a comb of honey on the otherside of this brood-comb. I set the hiveaside, and throw a little gTass or a fewweeds oyer the entrance, and it will takecare of itself. Most of the old bees will goback; but enough will remain to make agood beginning for a new colony. The swarming season is the natural timefor the supersedure of old queens, or suchas have become exhausted by excessive pro-lificness. Queen-cells are started, and, whenof proper age, the colony swarms; and thequeen, unable to fly, drops to the groundand is lost. The colony returns to the hive. JL\Y 1, 1913 293

A young queen also takes the place ofthe old one in the i^arent hive. Now% if weshake a colony preparing to swarm with anold or poor queen on empty combs, or evenstart a nucleus with such a Cjueen. we shallbe almost sure to meet with disappointment, for she will most likely fill a small patch ofcomb with eggs, and disappear: and queen-tells are started on these in order that thecolony may secure a queen to replace theone which the bees recognize as no longerof value. But what should be done with all thecombs of brood which have been taken fromthose colonies which were shaken on emptycombs? Well, that is a part of my story.Early in the season there are usually somecolonies that are not strong enough to be-gin work in supers. Indeed, not more thanfive or six combs of brood will be found inihem, and in some it may be even less.AVhen one has plenty of
