Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Glas Eilean Eilean Mór and Glas Eilean block about half the width of Loch Sunart, whilst the south shore is built up from alluvial outwash from Glen Laudale, creating a wide shallow bar. This combination results in the Laudale narrows, through which the tide moves at up to 3½ knots at springs. The photo was taken as we paddled against the ebb stream about an hour after peak flow, and about midway between springs and neaps. We were keeping as shallow as we could (sea kayaks only need about 15cm of water) to avoid the main flow, which was probably running about two knots - maybe half as fast as a fit paddler can maintain. Fortunately, it is only for a short distance, and we were within a couple of kilometres of our take out point, so we could afford to expend the energy to get past this obstacle.
