Summary
[edit]DescriptionGlacier Erosion (31716053364).jpg |
Courtesy of Rocky Mountain National Park Glaciers that flow over bedrock can erode their beds sculpting the landscape to create unique features like U-shaped valleys, horns, and arêtes. They do this by processes known as abrasion and plucking. Abrasion: rocks and sediment contained within the ice scratch the bedrock like sandpaper. Plucking: weaknesses and fractures in bedrock grow under fluctuations in subglacial environment, eventually coalescing and isolating blocks of bedrock that are removed by the glacier. |
