Joseph Bernard est né à Vienne dans l'Isère en 1866. Son père exerçait le métier de tailleur de pierre et lui apprit très tôt à graver la pierre et le marbre. Après avoir étudié aux Beaux-Arts de Lyon à partir de 1881 et de Paris à partir de 1885 grâce à une bourse, Joseph Bernard s'installe à Paris où il devient l'élève de Pierre-Jules Cavelier. Cependant, il abandonne l'école très rapidement. Pour subsister, il travaille alors dans une imprimerie le jour et sculpte la nuit. Une exposition de 1908 chez Hébrard le rend célèbre et ses œuvres sont ensuite exposées à l'Armory Show de New York en 1913, fait exceptionnel pour un sculpteur français. Ses œuvres sont également exposées au Salon d'Automne de 1911. En 1913, il créa un bas-relief de marbre "La Frise de la Danse". IL SCULPTA ÉGALEMENT PLUSIEURS SCULPTURES EN RONDE-BOSSE TELLE QUE LA PORTEUSE D'EAU, EXPOSÉES AU MUSÉE D'ORSAY. Il fut victime d'une congestion cérébrale et devint hémiplégique. Il recommença à peindre en 1917 puis à sculpter en 1918. Il présenta de nombreux bronzes à l'exposition universelle des Arts décoratifs en 1925. Peu de temps avant sa mort, il se consacrait au dessin et à l'aquarelle. Il décède à Boulogne-Billancourt dans les Hauts de Seine en 1931. Une rue de Boulogne porte son nom. SON ŒUVRE Fervent admirateur de Rodin, Joseph Bernard utilisa de la terre glaise à ses débuts pour de nombreuses sculptures dont il ne reste désormais que des fragments ("Le Fardeau de la Vie", "le Monument à la Paix)). "L'Espoir Vaincu" est la seule sculpture de Joseph Bernard réminiscente de l'oeuvre de Rodin qui ait survécu. La ville de Vienne lui commanda le monument à Michel Servet qu'il réalisa entre 1905 et 1911. Abandonnant le modelage de la terre, il réalisa par la suite de nombreuses statues en plâtre taillé puis poli à l'effigie de jeunes filles ("La Jeune Fille à la Cruche", "La Jeune Fille se coiffant", "La jeune fille aux tresses", "La Jeune Femme à l'Enfant"). Joseph Bernard devint l'un des acteurs principaux de la période post-rodinienne et se caractérise par son style sobre et stylisé.
