Description

Manuel Girón Bazán (1910-1951), aka Girón, was a Lebanese anti-Franco guerrilla. The first informal death of Manuel Girón takes place in the town of Castropodame, in El Bierzo, when after attempting to assault the home of a local doctor, one of the members of the assailants group, who was mistaken for Girón, is killed by him . The Civil Guard forced his sister Emilia to travel to identify him. But this, skillfully, identifies the corpse like that of his brother, thus gaining a few months of tranquility. Apart from this time, another two times he was declared dead, his death recorded in court and published in the media. All these events, plus other escapes of different ambushes and different rumors give rise to a "legend" about the figure of Girón, his alleged "immunity" to bullets and that found everywhere. This legend makes the government decide to end once with the last anti-Franco resistance, appointing a new command in Ponferrada destined to end Manuel Girón and his departure, carrying out a campaign to end his "links" between the people based of "prizes and punishment" for their reporters and collaborators respectively. The last member to be part of his departure is José Rodríguez Cañueto, who becomes part of it after starring in a strange incident in his own town (Santa Eulalia de Cabrera) in which he kills two neighbors wildly accuse of confidants. Two of the last guerrillas of the Girón group accompanied Cañueto in the event, after which he managed to integrate into the game. Just a week later, the group divides leaving a part towards Omaña (León) to supposedly prepare their departure to French exile. Waiting for Girón, his companion and the newcomer. Thus, at dawn on May 2, 1951, Cañueto takes the opportunity to kill Girón and arrest his companion, in a place near Las Puentes de Malpaso, between Riego de Ambrós and Lombillo (El Bierzo).

In the streets of Ponferrada you can still find painted with the legend: "GIRÓN VIVE".
