In Justice a transition is effected to the more dis-tinctively celestial virtues, and this is marked not onlyby the angels who execute her bidding, but also bythe elaborate Gothic throne in which she sits.* Aswith Injustice, the treatment is more elaborate thanthat of the other allegorical figures, and the virtueis clearly considered more in its effect upon thecommunity than in its appearance in the individual.Being raised only a few feet above the floor of thechapel, the allegorical figures have suffered in severalcases from wantonly inflicted injury. The band bywhich Despair hangs herself, the face of Envy and theclaws which are her substitute for nails, have beenwilfully effaced, and the same is true of the heads oftwo small figures on either side of Justice. But a stillmore surprising liberty has been taken with this fresco,in the addition of certain details, meant no doubt toexplain the artists purpose, but, in fact, sadly obscuring * Cj. fresco of Pentecost.
