figure in a position which makes forward movementimpossible. A spur of rock is brought into the fore-ground in front of Christ: he is not therefore edginground it, but shrinking into it. The face is pitiably weak.To enter into further details of comparison will notbe necessary; but it is interesting to note that the rockybackground closely agrees in spirit with that used in theLazarus at Assisi: the artist devotes much attentionto it, and introduces a ravine to separate Christ fromthe tomb. Giotto, as before, sets his principal figure inrelief against the sky. The presence of the sleeping soldiers in the Paduandesign, though they give it an added value, as Mr. Frypoints out, cannot be taken as an argument in eitherdirection. In the Paduan series, where the life of Christis the centre of interest, they add an important link to the chain of events. But they do not belong in asimilar degree to the life of the Magdalen, and wererightly omitted by the artist who painted her chapel atAssisi.
