Title
Gilded Disc Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Roman copper-alloy gilded disc plate brooch dating to AD 200 - 350. The brooch is almost complete, the pin and central setting are missing. The brooch is circular in plan and rectangular in cross section, there is a central circular depression which probably once held a decorative setting, though only a brown residue now remains. The depression has a raised edge or collar and is surrounded by two broad, concentric grooves separated by a rounded ridge. There is a further concentric ridge around the outer edge of the brooch. Between the two ridges the brooch is decorated with small pattern of vertical raised lines. The front of the brooch has retained gilding. The back of the brooch is undecorated and retains two semi-circular projecting lugs on a vertical axis. One would have housed the pin and the other the catchplate for the pin.
