Description

St Gildas dit le Sage - Gweltaz ar Fur - vers 500-565 Statue en bois polychrome dans la chapelle St Gildas de Carnoët.

Gildas est né dans le royaume brittonique de Strathclyde, situé sur le territoire de l’Ecosse actuelle (Southern Uplands). Il est l’auteur notamment du “De excidio Britanniæ“ qui peut se traduire par “De la décadence de la Bretagne”. La période est en effet cruciale, elle correspond à l’abandon de l’île de Bretagne par Rome et à l’avancée des peuples germaniques. “De excidio Britanniæ“ est un des rares textes ce cette époque qui nous soit parvenu. Installé en Armorique, il y aurait fondé le monastère de Saint Gildas de Rhuys ainsi que l'ermitage Saint Gildas à Bieuzy, dans des rochers surplombant le Blavet. Il s'éteint en 565 sur l'ile d'Houat.

Sont culte est très présent en Basse Bretagne.
