Xo. 41GILBERT CHARLES STUART American: 1756—1828 PORTRAIT OF JOHN WILLET HOOD Height, 42 inches; width, 24% inches John Willet Hood, Rear Admiral of the Red, Alee Admiral ofthe Coasts of Devonshire and Cornwall, Lord Warden of theStannaries. The admiral is portrayed in rich dark blue coat with broadrevers and buttons of dull gold, its scarlet lined collar turnedoutward and bent down upon the shoulder. He wears a whitestock and gracefully arranged jabot, and a small gray-whitewig. He faces the left, nearly three-quarters to the front, withfixed, steady gaze straight ahead. His eyes are blue and hischeeks rosy, and the flesh tones throughout are in the crisp,fresh rendering characteristic of the painter. With the lightconcentrated on the head and dimming as it falls upon thefigure, the subject is seen against a neutral background of olivetones shading into brown.

English: 1761—1807 LIEUTENANT GEORGE HOOD ROBINSON Height, 37% inches; width, 31 inches Made captain when only twenty-one years old and placed incommand of H.M. sloop-of-war Wolverene, of twelve guns andseventy men. Gallantly distinguished himself in attacking anddefeating two French luggers of superior force, off Boulogne,on January 3, 1801, and died in consequence of his Mounds.(His mother was Maria Hood.) The young lieutenant is represented at three-quarter length, ina dark dress uniform with naval buttons and further relievedby a white jabot and waistcoat. He is facing the left, three-quarters front, his face turned to look full at the spectator withfrank, unaffected glance. He has a closed spyglass in one handand the gold hilt of his sword appears below it. His brownhair falls carelessly over his forehead, and his face is of delicateand warm color. Included in the background is a glimpse ofthe sea, with a group of people about a boat on the shore. Xo. 43PA
