Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Gibsons Mill Lord Holme Mill - to give it its official title - was one of the first generation textile mills of the industrial revolution. The mill near Hebden Bridge was opened by Abraham Gibson in 1800. The Mill was driven by a water wheel initially and produced cotton cloth up until 1890. In 1833, 21 workers were employed in the building, each working an average 72 hours per week, but the business suffered when steam power took over as the main form of power supply. Subsequently, the mill became a dance hall and holiday park, until it closed in 1945. When the last of the Gibsons, Abrahams great grandson 'young Ab' died he bequeathed the mill and the surrounding Hardcastle Crags area to the National Trust in 1956.
