Summary

[edit]
Description

Giant sauropod dinosaur rib (probably Apatosaurus) (9 feet long) from the Jurassic of Wyoming, USA (public display, MOR 957-6-12-93-137, Museum of the Rockies, Bozeman, Montana, USA).

Sauropod dinosaurs were the largest terrestrial animals ever. They all have the same basic body plan: large body with four walking legs, very long neck & tail, and a small head relative to body size. Sauropods were herbivores, and are often perceived as holding their heads & necks up high to reach vegetation normally out of reach to other organisms. Modern reconstructions of many sauropod species depict them with heads and necks held close to the horizontal, or at low angles above the horizontal.

The long, straight, single bone at right is a 9 foot long rib from a very large sauropod dinosaur, probably Apatosaurus. Museum of the Rockies researchers estimate that the living animal was about 80 feet long and weighed about 24 tons. The large leg to the left of the rib is from an adult Diplodocus sauropod dinosaur. The leg on the far left is from a juvenile Diplodocus.
