A glance at the Ghar el Mellah lagoon, from the main entrance of the old Turkish harbour and through an old gate in the city's walls

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Ghar el Mellah lagoon is a RAMSAR site in the North of Tunisia, allowing more than 230 fishermen's families to stay living in their very old formerly pirates harbour city. It was funded by phenicians to be an avanced protective position at the entry of the bay of Utique. After the bay was filled by the Medjerda River sediments over ages, the city of Utique disappeared, and the bay almost closed to create the current lagoon, to which the old harbour of the city of Ghar el Mellah is closely related.
