Text Appearing Before Image:
ents. By dusk Sickles Third Corps and Slocums TwelfthCorps had arrived; and Hancocks Corps, the Second, were near at hand. Stannards Second Vermont Bri-gade, which was to play so large a part in the battles ofJuly 2 and 3, also came up and reported to GeneralDoubleday. These forces made a long line of battleextending south along Cemetery Ridge. On Slocums arrival, Hancock relinquished commandof the field to him and rode to meet Meade, who wasadvancing from Taneytown. The Confederates were still formed in a semi-circlearound the Union line. They had been reinforced byLongstreets Corps in its entirety, with the exception ofPicketts Division, which was guarding the wagon trainsat Chambersburg. Lee had come on the field about three oclock in theafternoon and, after looking over the situation, hadrecommended—not ordered, so most authorities agree—Ewell to follow up his victory of the afternoon. ButEwell was unfit for further effort and so night fell onboth armies waiting for the morrow.
Text Appearing After Image:
The Second Days Fight There was but little rest for either army in the hoursof darkness between July 1 and 2. Lee, finding it im-possible to resume active operations during the night, spent the time in strengthening his lines, which heformed about a mile away from those of Meade. Longstreet, with McLaws and Hoods Divisionsof the First Corps, had arrived on the field about fouroclock that afternoon, July 1, and he now occupied theextreme right of the Confederate Army. PickettsDivision, of his corps, had not yet crossed the SouthMountain. To the north of Longstreet lay A. P. Hills ThirdCorps, consisting of Andersons, Heths and PendersDivisions, which had been the mainstay of the first daysfight against the First Corps of the Union Army underReynolds and later under Doubleday. Forming a right angle to Hills line, extendingthrough the town of Gettysburg along West and EastMiddle Streets, and curving around the east end of thetown in the low land lying at the base of East Cemeteryand Culps
