Pomp, der das Innere von St. Peter erfüllt, auf den ersten Blick wie ein Fremdlinc;,der sich durch Zufall hierher in die so anders geartete Welt verirrt hat, und dochist es dasjenige Moiuiment, das zuerst den kompositionellen Gedanken in das Grab-mal einführte, der von den Künstlern des Barocks aufgenommen und weitergebildetwurde. Zum erstenmal wird die thronende Figur des Lebenden umgeben von alle-gorischen Gestalten ! Eine Gesetzmässigkeit macht sich auch in der Entwicklung des römischenGrabmals geltend, seit der florentinische Künstlergeist sie leitet. Langsam baut sichauch hier nur eines auf das andere auf und wo neues geschaffen wird, gibt mannicht sogleich das alte preis. Daher hält der Meister trotz der eingeführten bedeut-samen Neuerung an der traditionellen Wiedergabe des liegenden Toten fest, so-dass der Lebende und Tote zugleich dargestellt wird. Wohl kommt ä
