Carolingian oratory of Germigny-des-Prés. In the eastern apse mosaic of the ninth century is the work of an artist related to the school of Provence. It consists of more than 130,000 small glass cubes and represents the Arch of Alliance. This is the only Carolingian mosaic preserved in France. Hidden under the lime wash, it was rediscovered by chance in 1820, when the parish priest sees that children play with blocks of colored glass, found in the church. A Latin inscription at the bottom of the work said: "See here and contemplate the holy oracle and cherubim, shine here the ark of the divine will. Before the show, trying to touch up by your prayers Master of thunder, and no shortage, I beg you to associate Theodulf to your wishes. " The mosaic represents the Ark of the Covenant. This is due to Theodulf. Indeed, the latter was iconophobe he refused the images of God, Christ, the Virgin and the saints in the churches, for fear that they will lead to idolatry. So he used the representation of the Ark of the Covenant to show the presence of God and his word. The Ark of the Covenant is a chest that in the Bible, contains the tables of the law (10 Commandments) to Moses on Mount Sinai. The description of the Ark of the Covenant, on which faithfully supports the representation of the mosaic is in the Bible (Exodus 25, 1021). The materials used for the mosaic are different by color: cubes of colored glass, whether or not covered by a thin layer of gold or silver, pottery fragment, pebbles of the Loire. |
