Summary
[edit]DescriptionGermany’s Southern Schneeferner loses glacier status.jpg |
English: Alpine glaciers have been heavily affected by the extreme temperatures recorded during the summer of 2022. One of these is the Southern Schneeferner glacier in Germany. The latest measurements from mid-September show that it has shrunk by 50 percent in the last four years. Because of the limited remaining mass of its ice sheet in respect of the slope profile, the Southern Schneeferner will stop flowing downhill, which means that it cannot be considered a ‘glacier’ anymore. The striking decrease of ice extent in the Southern Schneeferner glacier is visible in these images, acquired by Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites in 2016 and 2022. The Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission provides high-resolution data that can be used to produce detailed maps of snow and ice in Europe. |
