Summary

English: Two German transport boats carrying German officers arrive on the southern side of the town of Tiberias. Five Turkish officers stand waiting on the shore. Tiberias is nestled on the western shore of Lake Tiberias (or Lake Galilee) and was founded in the 18th century by Herod Antipas, who named it after the Emperor of Rome, Tiberias. In 1837 an earthquake destroyed sections of the city wall. In recent times Tiberias has grown outside the city walls and along the shore. One of a series of photographs showing local people and the activities of German and Turkish soldiers. The photographs are believed to have been purchased by Australian soldiers whilst serving in Egypt and Palestine during the First World War. |
