Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The German Type XB submarine U-117 under attack by U.S. Navy aircraft in the Atlantic Ocean, 7 August 1943. It was sunk by two Grumman F4F Wildcat, flown by Norman D. Hodson and Ernest E. Jackson, and three Grumman TBF Avenger, flown by Asbury H. Sallanger, Charles R. Stapler and R.H. Forney, of Composite Squadron 1 (VC-1) of the escort carrier USS Card (CVE-11) by gunfire, depth charges and an acoustic torpedo "Fido", which failed. When U-117 was attacked, it was replenishing U-66. Of the U-117 crew, Assistant Naval Surgeon Dr. Schrenk and Oberleutnant zur See Paul Frerks were on board U-66 during the attack. Dr. Schrenk was to treat the wounded of U-66 and Frerks was to stand in for the wounded commander of U-66. The remaining crew of U-117 died in the attack. U-66 was later sunk on 6 May 1944.
