Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This is an example of the back of a photograph showing a typed label that reads "German shell bursting close to our trenches." The back of this photograph also has a stamp showing that it has been passed by the Chief Field Censor. Other photographs in this collection carry stamps representing various different press agencies, and some indicate a price for reproduction eg.10s 6d (about 55p).

All letters, photographs and reports from the war zones were checked by the censors. This not only avoided useful information being passed to the enemy but it was also an attempt to limit the more frightening and depressing news from reaching the Home Front.
[Original reads: 'German shell bursting close to our trenches.']
