Summary
[edit]DescriptionGeorgian House, Lewes, East Sussex - geograph.org.uk - 1111791.jpg |
English: Georgian House, Lewes, East Sussex. Between the site of the East Gate and the bridge over the river are several 18th-century houses, the chief being Nos. 220 and 221, originally one building. It is faced with Caen stone, evidently taken from Lewes Priory, and has two large curved bay windows (out of sight to left and right of this image) towards the street. The parapet is carried up in a central pediment in which is a sundial bearing the motto of the Isted family nosce te ipsum.
(Text from 'The borough of Lewes: Introduction and history', A History of the County of Sussex: Volume 7:pp. 7-19.) This building can be seen (with red paintwork!) in Simon's 2007 image: 329303 |
