Description

RED CROSS HEADQUARTERS, Atlanta, Nov. 16, 2012 – Major Gen. Thomas R. Moore, Georgia’s Assistant Adjutant General-Air, joined the state’s First Lady Sandra Deal, and other military leaders and guests for a ceremony marking the official kick-off of this year’s Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes Campaign.

The Holiday Mail for Heroes program is a way for the public to send words of inspiration, thanks and encouragement to warrior heroes who are far from home, and the Georgia National Guard is helping to broaden awareness and support of that program. Here, General Moore and First Lady Deal, sign holiday cards addressed to military service members serving overseas as the Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign begins.

2012 marks the sixth year of the Holiday Mail for Heroes initiative. Since 2006, with the help of the public, the American Red Cross has distributed more than 4.7 million cards to members of the Armed Forces during the holiday season. All holiday cards mailed by the public are screened for hazardous materials, then packaged and shipped to Red Cross offices around the world for sorting and distribution to military members, veterans and their families.

To ensure cards are delivered in time for the holidays, they must be postmarked no later than Friday, Dec. 7. For more information about program guidelines, visit www.redcross.org/holidaymail

“Having been deployed many times over the years I can tell you that support like this from home goes a long way with our troops,” said Moore. “I'd like to thank everyone who has done this and encourage even more to send some love to our troops who are so far from home protecting our freedoms."
