The ochre of these deposits.,which is really only a pulverulent form of brown iron ore, is quite freefrom impurities, and well suited for making linoleum and paint. The output from the ochre mines in the Cartersville district last yearwas nearly 4,000 tons, about one-fourth of the ochre outpi^t of the UnitedStates. The greater part of the ochre now being mined r Bartow countyis said to be shipped to England, where it is used in the manufacture oflinoleum. In addition to the above named ochre, which is known as yel-low ochre, Georgia also produces a considerable amount of red ochre,which is the pulverized, or ground red fossil iron ore, obtained chieflyfrom Walker county. Bauxite.—Bauxite, a hydrate of alumina, first discovered in Americanear Pome Ga., in 1887, is a clay-like mineral used principally in themanufacture of alum and the metal aluminium. I33 of this mineral are found mainly in Floyd, Polk, and Bartow counties,where they occur in more or less extensive pockets associated with theresidual clays of the Knox dolomite. The size of these deposits, likethose of the brown iron ores, is quite variable. In some instances theyhave been known to have produced several thousand tons, but as a rulethe deposits are not so extensive. The physical appearance of the mineralbauxite, which varies from 30 to 70 per cent, alumina, is often amor-phous, resembling kaolin, but generally it has a concretionary or ooliticstructure. The first bauxite mined in the United States was from Hermitage,Floyd county, in 1889. Subsequent to this date, other mines wereopened in Floyd, Bartow and Polk counties, so that in a comparativelyshort time the mining of bauxite in Georgia became a very importantand lucrative industry.
