sub-scriptions, and a new Soldiers Home will soon be erected and equippedwith every modern convenience. NEWSPAPERS AND PERIODICALS. Although this is a chapter on the State government of Georgia, suchis the influence of the Press in moulding the thoughts of the people andshaping legislation, that it may be fittingly introduced in this connec-tion. The number and kind of newspapers and periodicals published in aState afford some indication of the character of its people. Judged bythis standard the people of Georgia are entitled to rank among the mostprogressive of the populations which compose the various commonwealthsof the American Union. The enterprise and ability of some of thegreat daily and weekly journals of the State, both secular and religious,have largely increased the influence of Georgia on political and relig-ious lines, and combined with the ability of some of her representativesin the national legislature, have given to our State high rank in thecouncils of the republic.
