thicken as the story advances, andthe microscopic sketches of the human passionsin provincial life, are so related that the interestis not only aroused at the beginning, butquickens more and more as one is admitted tothe inner consciousness of Guenn and her lover,if one whose cool selfishness for love can bestyled such. The author reveals the springs ofcharacter in her heroine by masterly touches.Guenn is a singularly happy creation. Al-though the book deals with out-of-the-waypeople, the delineations of character are excel-lent. It is legitimate fiction through and through ;but it belongs to that class of fiction which wemay not fear to have our children read. Thesweetness and beauty of the heroine are so trans-parent amid all her surroundings, and she soentirely fulfills the law of the creation of theimagination—that it shall be true to human nat-ure and yet the idealization of that nature—thatthe author is to be congratulated on havingstruck a high note in American literature.
