Summary
[edit]DescriptionGeorge Urban House, Cheektowaga, New York - 20191017.jpg |
English: The George Urban House, at 280 Pine Ridge Road in Cheektowaga, New York, October 2019. George Urban, Jr. was a prominent miller and brewer in neighboring Buffalo, famous as owner of the first rolling mill in the United States; this home served as his summer residence, and the eight or nine acres (about 3.5 ha) of land that once surrounded it served as a test farm where Urban grew experimental strains of wheat for the purposes of improving his factory's products, and also contained a vineyard, a pond stocked with trout and carp, and extensive rose gardens. The house is perhaps most historically prominent as the place where Grover Cleveland's first presidential campaign was launched; in 1883, at an outdoor picnic attended by Cleveland as well as many luminaries in Buffalo's business community, brewer Gerhard Lang led a toast to the then-New York governor as "our next President". The house is now available for rent as event space. |
