Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen in January 2021: on the south side of Amherst Street near the corner of Dearborn Street, in the Market Square Historic District in the Black Rock section of Buffalo, New York, is found a memorial to the late Judge George P. Burd (1887-1937). A native of Oxford, Pennsylvania, Burd graduated from the University of Buffalo's law school, and served as an attorney in private practice and occasional dabbler in politics (mounting an unsuccessful candidacy for State Senate in 1922, as a Democrat) before being elected to the City Court in 1931, where he served until an untimely death of intestinal disease. According to his obituary in the Buffalo Courier-Express, Burd was well-known for his gentle and easygoing manner, and his monument identifies him as a "standard-bearer for religious tolerance, fair play, athletic encouragement, [and] devotion to duty". Judge Burd's former residence at 190 Dearborn Street is seen in the background at center and right.
