e too much to saythat there has been a boom in Morlands picturesdue to quickened appreciation of their merits. It is impossible to look over the lists without beingstruck by the wide diversity in the prices paid ; thusamong the canvases sold in 1902 are two, practicallyof equal size, Woodcock Shooting and the CarriersStable, sold respectively for fifty and eleven hundredguineas ; again among the sales of 1905 we find thatBoys Skating, painted in 1791, that is to say, duringthe artists best period, sold for only eighty guineas, while Higglers Preparing for Market, practicallyidentical in size, brought two thousand guineas. Dawes remark concerning the future value ofMorlands pictures necessarily recurs to mind in thisconnection, and we find some justification for it. Theprices paid nowadays for the painters finest worksare out of all proportion to those commanded by hisless meritorious achievements ; but in noticing this wemust always bear in mind two points : first, theenormous number of pictures produced by Morland, and secondly, the circumstances under which a larg
