Description
English: American composer and songwriter George Frederick Root (1820–1895) in an 1868 photograph. Renowned for his Civil War-era songs such as "Battle Cry of Freedom," "Tramp! Tramp! Tramp!" and "The Vacant Chair," which he published under the Root & Cady firm, he was held as the most famous songwriter of his time. President Lincoln once wrote to Root: "You have done more than a hundred generals and a thousand orators."
