Description
George Washington Bush was one of Washington State's first Black pioneers and homesteaders. Bush settled with his family in the area now known as Tumwater in 1845. In 1850, the Donation Land Act passed which prohibited Black settlers from owning land. Bush was so widely respected in his community that the Washington Territorial legislature petitioned Congress for an exemption so that Bush could own his land. That request, seen here, was approved in January 1955 January 1855.
