English: George Barnes' memorial In the churchyard can be found this memorial to George Barnes a Crimean War veteran, complete with a representation of his campaign medal. The inscription reads
"In memory of George Barnes 20th foot a victor at Inkermann Balaklava Alma who died at home Burgh on Bain June 13 1855 aged 28 years. This memorial was erected in respectful remembrance of his good conduct as a soldier by the vicar of Burgh on Bain August 1858" The battle of the Alma took place September 20 1854, Balaklava October 25 1854 and Inkermann November 5 1854. The day this picture was taken was the 155th anniversary of the Battle of Balaklava and it is possible that George Barnes' demise was related to his battle experiences just the year before |
