servations to many geologists who may not find it convenient to consult his original paper. All three figures here published have been redrawn for the purpose. Plate XII is based on a coloured map, and Plate XIII on photographs which have already been reproduced by Professor Milne in his review. Usu-san is one of a group of volcanoes situated in the south-westernpeninsula of the island of Yezo, Japan. It is bounded on the southby the sea, and on the north by the Lake of Toya—a circular lakesome 10 km. in diameter and 187 m. in depth. The distance of thecentre of the volcano from the nearest point of the sea is 47 km., andfrom the lake 2*2 km. ; in fact, the situation could not be more con-venient than it is for dealing with questions involving measurementof changes of level. ) Geol. Usu-san, Japan. 249 The main features in the topograpliy of the mountain aresummarized in the map, Plate XII. It will be noticed that twoprominent summits, 0-usu and Ko-usu, rise within the crater hollow. These two are apparently of prehistoric origin, but are ascribed byOmori to the pushing up of molten lava mass which solidified duringthe process. A neighbouring volcano, Tarumai-san, built upa similar lava-dome, 134 m. high, during an eruption which lastedthree months of the year 1909. Kompira-yama and the East andWest Maru-yamas, on tlie northern flanks of Usu-san, are alsoregarded as lava-domes, but evidence in regard to their geologicalrelationships is very meagre, since the whole of the lower portion ofthe volcano is swathed in soil of great depth. The crater of Usu-santook no part in the 1910 eruption, but Kompira-yama and WestMaru-yama were both the sites of active explosions. There are records of previous eruptions at Usu-san for the years1663, 1769, 1822, and 1853. In the cas
