xile with them in 1830,taking up his abode thenceforth in the city of Prague. His laboursin elucidating the Silurian System of Central Bohemia extendingover nearly 40 years have resulted in the production of 22 massivequarto volumes of text, and admirably executed plates of fossils, pro-bably the most elaborate and costly work ever produced by a singleworker. (We shall give a full account of Barrandes labours, withhis portrait, in our next Number.—Edit. Geol. Mag.) We have also to record the death, in his 75th year, of The Eev.Dr. Oswald Heer, Professor of Botany in the University of Zurich—the well-known palseobotanist, and author of the admirable workentitled Urwelt der Schweiz (Zurich, 1865), published in thiscountry by Mr. James Heywood, F.R.S., in 1876, under the title of The Primaeval World of Switzerland (translated by W. S. Dallas,F.L.S., Sec. Geol. Soc). Dr. Heer is the author of nearly 100papers on Paleobotany and Entomology. Geol. Mag. i88- Decade II. Vol. X. Plate XIV.
Text Appearing After Image:
THE GEOLOGICAL MAGAZINE. NEW SERIES. DECADE II. VOL. X. No. XII.—DECEMBER, 1883. OEIG-I1TAL ABTIOLES. I.—Sketch of the Life of Joachim Barrande, of Prague. With a Portrait.1 (PLATE XIV.) THE usually quiet city of Prague in Bohemia, with its populationof 235,000 inhabitants, considerably more than half of whom areCzechs, has been deeply moved by the recent death of an old Frenchexile, who for more than half a century had made his home there, and, having taken up the geology of the country around Prague forhis study, had endeared himself to the people by learning theirlanguage and interesting them in his pursuits. After publishing atgreat cost his geological works, and amassing a vast collection offossils, he has at his death bequeathed his Library and Collections(valued at £20,000) to the Prague Museum, together with funds forthe completion of his scientific labours. To-day, writes Dr.Fritsch,2 I have opened a Barrande Fund with 1,000 florins, which I hope will soon reach to fl. 20,0
