In the north-western provincesof China and the southern parts of Mongolia may be found thespecies figured. That in the foreground is the superb goldenplieasant (71iau7nalea^ncta), a bird that can hardly be surpassedfor splendour of plumage by any denizen of the tropics. Thelarge bird perched above is the eared pheasant (Crossoptilonauritum), a sj)ecies of com))aratively sober i)lumage but ofremarkable and elegant form. In tlie middle distance is Pallasssand grouse (S//rrh(fptcs paradoxus), a curious bird, whoso nativecountry seems to be the liigli plains of Northern Asia, but whichoften abounds near Iekin, and in ISO.i astonished Juirupeauornithologists by appearing in cinisiderable numbers in Centraland Western Europe, in every part of Croat Britain, and evenin Ireland. In the distance are some deer, a group of animalsvery abundant and varied in this part of the PalaBarctic region. Reptiles and Amj^hihia.—Eeptiles are scarce in North China,only four or five species of snakes, a lizard and one of the Geck-otidte occurring in the country round Pekin. The genus Ilalysis the most characteristic form of snake, while Ccdlophis, anoriental genus, extends to Japan. Among lizards, Plestiodon,Mayhoinja, Tac/njdromus, and Gecko reach Japan, the two Latterbeing very characteristic of the Oriental region. Amphibia are more abundant and interesting; Hynohius,Oiiychodaciyhis, and Sieholdtia (Salamandridse) being peculiarto it, while most of the European genera are also represented.
