  • Caption from caption list: George Evans, Chief Disbursing Clerk of the Interior Department has been employed in the Interior continuously for fifty six years. In 1864 at the age of 14 Evans was a drummer boy in the Union Army. At Gettysburg he met Abraham Lincoln who took an interest in the boy and brought him back to Washington appointing him as a messenger in the Interior Department. Evans now holds one of the most responsible positions in the Department.
