Summary

[edit]
Description

Centrum - Sint-Veerleplein The Old Fish Mine is one of the oldest markets in Ghent. The gatehouse, erected in rococo style in 1689 and adorned with three images of sea gods, was badly damaged by a fire in 1872. Only the statue of Neptune could be saved. The other images were replaced by new images of a man and a woman representing the Scheldt and the Leie. A covered market hall as a selling point for fish, meat and vegetables was added while public fish was also sold on the open market square.

The building was fitted with neo-gothic facades, in anticipation of the 1913 World Exhibition.
