es as it would appear about Bimini,Bahamas. The model of a Manta or Devilfish (Mantabirostris) was made from a specimen takenin 1915 near Captiva Islands, off the WestCoast of Florida, by Russell J. Coles. It meas- ures 17 feet across the out-stretched wings.Still larger specimens up to zz feet wide areon record. The .Manta, like other skatesand rays, may be regarded as a wingedshark in which the body has become de-pressed and the breast fins enlarged intowings which arc the chief organs of loco-motion. The Whale Shark (Rhineodon typus) isan 18-foot specimen taken at Acapulco,.Mexico, March :, 1935. This species is thelargest and most characteristically markedof living sharks. In 1935, 76 specimens hadbeen recorded. Among these a measuredspecimen reached 45 feet in length, but thereare reliable estimates of 60 to 70 feet. Themarkings form a striking pattern of verticalyellow bars separating vertical rows of yel-low spots. (Beloiv) VIPER FISH (Clauliodus) PURSUINGBIGHEADS I Melamphaes)

The Deep Sea Fishes form a special ex-libit in an inner room. Here in the semi-darkness we view some of the hobgoblins ofhe ocean depths—manv of them coveredwith jewels of phosphorescent light. Fishes that live at great depths have to beible to endure enormous water pressure,o\v temperatures and total darkness. At onenile depth each square inch of surface of aishs bodv is under a pressure equal toibout one ton. But the pressure is equaln all directions. It permeates the whole)odv of the fish inside and outside and videntlv does not injure the most deli-cate tissues. A small exhibit in the left-hand cor-ler of the central darkened room tells)f the remarkable life-history in which here is a striking transformation of theStalk-eyed fish into a Gleaming-ailed Sea Dragon. This exhibit is based)n the investigations and material)f Dr. William Beebe in onnection with deep waters of the surface. Thecountless myriads of mi-croscopic plants areabsorbed by themicroscopic ani-mals and these KALE
