oung turtles are hatching fromeggs which have been hidden by the motherin the alligators nest. The group is a repro-duction of a Florida cypress swamp and river cove in September. It portrays the feed-ing habits of several snakes, the breedinghabits of various turtles and toads, and manyother reptiles and amphibians. A Neiv England Marshland in Spring.Toads and frogs come to the marshes andponds in the spring to breed. The males callloudlv to attract mates. The shrill peepingwhich arises from so many ponds of easternUnited States is made by a diminutive treefrog, while the trill which resounds frommanv orchards and water lily ponds is thevoice of the grav tree frogs. Each species offrog and toad has a distinctive voice. In call-ing, the throat of manv species is blown outinto a balloon-like sac and acts as a resonatingorgan. GiLi Monsters. The Gila Monster is wellknown as the only poisonous lizard in theUnited States. In the group but one species.Helodertna suspectum, is shown. The onlyother poisonous lizard known, the .MexicanGila monster, Heloderma horrendum, is ex-hibited in a floor group in the adjacent mainhall. The present group shows a small sectionof one of the canyons of the Santa Catalina.Mountains, Arizona. The snake gliding overthe rocks is the Sonoran Racer, Masticophisbilineatus. The desert tortoise, Gopherusagassizii, illustrated below, is seeking a hidingplace for the nitjht. AMPHIBIA AND REPTILESOF NEW YORK STATE An exhibit showing the species found withinthe State of New York may be seen in thecorridor of the Roosevelt Memorial on thefirst floor.
