The two men on horseback werepointing at Fred and yelling: There! theregoes the villain who did it. Fire! fire! thundered a colonel who had justsprung out of the foremost car. A hundred riflesblazed. Freds horse, was seen to stumbleslightly; the boy swayed, and leaned forward inhis seat; but quickly recovering himself, he turnedaround and waving his hat shouted defiance. Great heavens! shouted a boys voice.That is Fred Shackelford, and that horse isPrince. It was Calhoun Pennington who spoke.The colonel who had given the order to fire turnedpale, staggered and would have fallen if one of hisofficers had not caught him.

Pire ! Fire ! thundered a Colonel who had just sprung out ofthe foremost car. A DARING DEED. 143 Merciful God! he moaned. I ordered mymen to fire on my own son. The officers gathered around General Buckner,who stood looking at the wrecked engine withhopeless despair pictured in every feature. Hisvisions of glory had vanished, as it were, in a mo-ment. No plaudits from an admiring world, noHail! the conquering hero comes. Utter failurewas the end of the movement for which he hadhoped so much. Surprise was now impossible. Itwould take hours to clear away the wreck. Hegroaned in the agony of his spirit, and turnedaway. His officers stood by in silence; his sorrowwas too great for words of encouragement. Then a most pathetic incident occurred. Colo-nel Shackelford tottered up to General Buckner,pale as death, and trembling in every limb. Gen-eral, he gasped, it was my boy, my son who didthis.
