Description |
English: General Kitchener and the Anglo-egyptian Nile Campaign, 1898 The entrance to Wadi Halfa prison, where Emir Mahmoud, leader of the Sudanese (Dervish) forces, was held after defeat at the Battle of Atbara. The open gate is guarded by a Sudanese sentry and prisoners are visible in the courtyard beyond. Photograph was probably taken on the day of the departure of 21st Lancers, when prisoners were used as porters to convey the Regiment's luggage to the train. |
