English: This 1821 map of Kiev Province is from a larger work,Geograficheskii atlas Rossiiskoi imperii, tsarstva Pol'skogo i velikogo kniazhestva Finliandskogo (Geographical atlas of the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Poland, and the Grand Duchy of Finland), containing 60 maps of the Russian Empire. Compiled and engraved by Colonel V.P. Piadyshev, it reflects the detailed mapping carried out by Russian military cartographers in the first quarter of the 19th century. The map shows population centers (six gradations by size), monasteries, plants and factories, inns, postal stations, roads (four types), and provincial and district borders. Distances are shown in versts, a Russian measure, now no longer used, equal to 1.07 kilometers. Legends and place-names are in Russian and Polish. The territory depicted on the map is in present-day Ukraine. This region comprised much of Right-Bank Ukraine, on the western side of the Dnieper River. In the late ninth century, Vikings from present-day Sweden established the state of Kievan Rus' in this region. Until the Mongol raids in the 13th century, Kiev served as the capital for all the Rus' lands. Later a part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the area became Kiev Province and was absorbed by the Russian Empire after the Second Partition of Poland in 1793. World Digital Library. |
