Summary
[edit]DescriptionGene Frankel Theater 24 Bond Street.jpg |
The Gene Frankel Theater at 24 Bond Street between the Bowery and Lafayette Street in the NoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The building was constructed in 1893 and designed by Buchman & Deisler in Renaissance Revival style. The building was the location of Robert Mapplethorpe's studio from c.1972 until his death in 1989. The Gene Frankel Theater has occupied the street floor since 1986. The gold dancers on the outside of the building by sculptor Bruce Williams were added in 1998, and had to be retroactively approved by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission when the NoHo Historic District was extended to include the building in 2008.
