Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Men and women are expected to play certain roles in society and behave in certain ways based on traditions, religion and other beliefs, these behaviours are learned and shape gender norms in a society. Unfortunately, in many countries, gender norms create disadvantages mainly for women and partially for men. It puts pressure on men by requiring men to earn a living for their families. Girls are not sent to school or allowed to work, as gender norms in most countries see women's primary duties as getting married and doing housework. Even if they work, they get paid less than men despite doing the same job. And all of these situations hinder ‘gender equality’. According to UNICEF, gender equality "means that women and men, and girls and boys, enjoy the same rights, resources, opportunities and protections. It does not require that girls and boys, or women and men, be the same, or that they be treated exactly alike."

!

So, what can we do to promote gender equality? The first thing we need to do before promoting gender equality is to learn what gender equality is. Then we should teach this topic to others so that we can raise awareness of gender equality. For example, emphasizing that sexist jokes are wrong can raise awareness. One of the most fundamental ways to establish and promote gender equality is the equal division of housework and childcare between men and women. In this way, children who grow up in that house will internalize and practice gender equality. In addition to this, we should give men and women an equal say and should treat women and men equally in all environments such as school and workplace. Last but not the least, we have to remove the gender pay gap by making the same amount of payment to male and female employees in the same position to promote gender equality. To summarize, we must be conscious, raise awareness, and ensure that both parties enjoy the same rights.
