JPEG file comment | Shortly after its first coating in December 1998, engineer John Filhaber inspects the reflective coating on the 8-meter Gemini North mirror on Mauna Kea. This first test coating has a total of about 1.5 aluminum cans worth of aluminum over the entire surface of the mirror. This telescope will eventually be coated with silver using a special technique to significantly enhance infrared performance. |
