Field Trip - Chippenham Fen - 17/07/19 I had an enjoyable evening at Chippenham Fen in Cambridgeshire with Colin Plant. The day had been warm and muggy (But not quite as silly as it has been these past few days). 26 degrees was the high and it wasn't set to drop below 17c all night. Unfortunately the weather was a bit unkind at times, in fact it rained on and off for much of the night, not heavy..but enough to make things a bit soggy. Luckily the heavier outburts came on the drive home. The moth species present were incredible to say the least. We logged a total of 289 species during the session, and after with dissections. Many moths were notable and also new for me. Species such as Agonopterix angelicella, Cosmopterix scribaiella, Dichomeris alacella, Evergestis pallidata, 2x Gelechia sp to double check yet and Vitula biviella were all personal highlights. 17th July 2019: Chippenham fen National Nature Reserve, Cambridgeshire Colin W. Plant & Ben Sale. Arrived approximately 20.30 hours. CWP set a 125 watt Robinson to the rear of the site building, affecting Forty Acre Wood to the north-east, plus a 125watt white bulb on a vertical sheet on the side of the Landrover parked by the site building and directed north-west up the main ride. Also, 5 x 8-watt actinic traps at 50 metre intervals along the woodland track running south-west from the car park. BS’s lights were – one in Forty Acre Wood and two in the centre of the fen (Jerusalem Wood area). Total was thus 11 lights. BS packed up from 01.00 and left the site at 02.00. CWP packed up at 02.30 and left the site at about 03.15.
