Description according to Strelitzia 29, p. 133. G. aspera. Cormous geophyte, 10–35 cm, tunics woody, imbricate, stem velvety. Leaves sword-shaped, margins and midrib slightly thickened. Flowers blue-violet, sometimes white, tepals spreading, stamens usually slightly unequal. Aug.–Sept. Mostly sandy soils, flats and slopes, 10–700 m, Gifberg to Agulhas.
